More than one fan wanted a photo of her, but Nic appreciated that Sadie didn’t try and rope her into the madness. It was one thing to be included in incidental pictures, but she wasn’t about to participate in a photo line. Eventually the line of fans thinned, and by the end of the second hour there were only a few people left. Sadie stayed a few minutes longer to make sure everyone got their picture, but then it was time to surrender the space to the next celebrity who would be the subject of hundreds of selfies with their adoring public.

At a bigger conference, she might have been able to shepherd her client back to their room without needing to traverse any part of the conference floor, but ShudderCon wasn’t set up that way. To make it to the elevator, she and Sadie had to cross an open stretch of floor littered with fans and then pass through a sliver of the casino that seemed to grow bigger every time Nic looked away from it. Casinos in Vegas were like living things, hungry living things that would eat a person alive if they weren’t careful.

“Ohmygod that’s her!”

The shrieking cry was the only warning Nic had before a swarm of fans descended. These weren’t like the well-behaved crowd at the photo line. Those fans had been enthusiastic, these people were rabid.

Nic only made out snippets of what they were saying, and there were plenty of mentions of a video, sex, and tape. Sadie had frozen in place, and Nic stepped in front of her, doing her best to bodily shield her from the mass. She counted heads and was surprised it was only a handful of people, three men and two women. But a crowd like this could turn into a frenzy and attract others in no time, and they needed to get out of there before that happened. Nic wrapped her fingers around Sadie’s wrist, tugging her forward and ignoring the people who didn’t want to let them go. It was Sadie’s job to placate fans, Nic didn’t have that same concern.

“Break it up!” a low voice called from somewhere behind them. Nic thought she recognized him as one of the conference security guards, but her focus was on getting Sadie out of there.

Grumbling came from the fans, and they didn’t move. She could hear someone insisting it was their right as con attendees to interact with the celebrities they saw, and a part of Nic wanted to wheel around and demand to know what kind of twisted place they’d been raised in where it was perfectly polite behavior to ask a person about their sex life when they didn’t know one another.

They made it to the elevator, which came swiftly. Security had the fans under control and Nic got Sadie inside, barring anyone else from entering. As the door slid shut, Nic looked her over. She was a bit pale under her thick makeup, and her breath was ragged.
